Pine Needle Baskets

The pine needles in all my baskets are carefully hand picked by me off the forest floors of Minnesota forests.  I never take any pine needles that are green and still being used by the tree.

I boil the needles to remove any pests and soften the needles to I can coil them into backests.

​

Purple Diamond Stitch with Purple Beads

This basket took 2-3 weeks to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This stitch takes exceptionally longer than other stitches because you have to stich forward to secure the row of needles and then back stitch the entire row to create the diamond affect.

White Diamond Stitch with Turquoise Beads

This basket took 2-3 weeks to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This stitch takes exceptionally longer than other stitches because you have to stich forward to secure the row of needles and then back stitch the entire row to create the diamond affect.

I added the turquoise beads in a diamond pattern all the way around the outside of the basket.

Purple Spiral Stitch with White Beads

This basket took about 1.5 months to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This is one of the largest baskets I've made. This basket was made specifically to fit this planter pot.

Spiral Stitched Topped Basket

This basket took 2-3 weeks to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This basket has 2 parts: the main basket and the top.

Handle Basket

This is what is called a "V" stitch. I used white, brown, green and tan thread.

Celtic Horses

This basket took about 2 months to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This flat basket was done using a variety of stitches and different colored threads.

I drew the pattern of the Celtic horses onto the circular piece of pine and then wood burned it to make the pattern permanent. Followed by varnishing the wood to protect it from moisture and stains.

I added some beads around one coil.

Red Basket

This basket took 1 week to complete.

Half the pine needles were dyed a light red and used with plain pine needles to create a variegated look. I also worked the coils to create some gaps on the top of the basket to create a unique/interesting pattern. I applied silver filigree beads in between those gaps.

This basket took about 1 week to complete working on it a few hours each night.

This basket took 2-3 weeks to complete. I could only work on it a few hours after work each night.  This was the second pine needle basket I ever made.
